Manuel Cabrera

KIPP Houston Alumnus
Graduated from Hofstra University in May 2008 with a degree in Political Science
Graduated from South Texas College of Law in May 2015 as a Doctor of Jurisprudence

My future plans:
With my law degree, I plan to focus on education law and litigation. Texas is not only a hotbed for education reform, but is also in the middle of serious problems with the way it finances public education. I hope to hold people responsible for the problems we have and do my part to get our state to where it needs to be.

A challenge I overcame in law school:
Comparing myself to others. The rest of the students in my class were just as capable and eager as me. Our prior academic performance and our LSAT scores showed we were all capable of succeeding in law school. However, after my first year, I had a B- average and I didn’t get my first A until my fourth semester. I was able to get top grades only after I stopped comparing myself to others and began to understand that I held the key to my own academic success.

My advice to KIPP students entering college or grad school:
Really think about what you want to do in life, and then find someone who has already traveled that path and learn as much as you can from them. It is difficult going through school on your own, not knowing how you’ll accomplish your goals. The more support you have, the better your position will be in the end.
